A Trio of Americans Fatally Wounded in Syrian Territory by Alleged ISIS Assailant, US Defense Department Reports

A deadly ambush in the heart of Syria on Saturday resulted in the deaths of a pair of American troops and a US civilian translator, with several other people wounded, as stated by the US Department of Defense.

This offensive on US troops in the historic city of Tadmur represents the initial event to inflict casualties since the ouster of ex-leader Bashar al-Assad roughly a year ago.

"The attack took place while the soldiers were conducting a key leader engagement," a Pentagon spokesperson stated. "Their mission was in support of ongoing anti-ISIS / anti-terror missions in the area."

The attacker responsible for the shooting was eliminated by partner forces, as confirmed by a declaration from the Secretary of Defense.

Details Withheld For Privacy

Central Command indicated that, to respect the privacy for the families and in accordance with standard procedure, the identities of the deceased personnel will not be released until 24 hours after their next of kin have been informed.

Earlier reports from Syrian state media and a conflict observatory stated that shots erupted during a tour by American troops to the area of Palmyra.

Conflicting Reports Emerge

According to a state-run media outlet, a pair of local security forces and a number of US service members were injured in the exchange. The injured were reportedly evacuated by helicopters to a military base near the frontier with neighboring countries.

An official for the Syrian government claimed a gunman linked to Islamic State began shooting at the gate of a military post. Authorities are looking into whether the individual was a formal member of the organization or simply adhered to its extreme ideology.

This spokesperson also refuted a report from a UK-based rights group that the gunman was a member of the security forces.

Ongoing American Deployment in the Region

The US currently has hundreds of troops deployed in Syria's east as a component of a multinational alliance combating the ISIS militant group.

Even after being militarily routed in Syria in 2019, the organization's dormant networks still carry out lethal strikes. UN assessments suggest the faction still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.

American forces have been targeted in the before. Among the deadliest prior incidents occurred in that year in northern Syria, when an blast killed two US service members and US civilians, among additional casualties.
