RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
