The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
