Whenever a significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
